Learning, studying, and completing courses are key steps in your development as a great coach, but sometimes you just need a quick answer or a reliable reference. At FYLA, we understand that, which is why we’ve compiled and continually update this resource list specifically for coaches. While you may not need everything here every day, these tools are always available when you do.

FYLA coaching roles

At FYLA, our coaching structure is designed to provide the best possible experience for our players by combining the expertise of paid coaches with the support and commitment of parent coaches. Each role has distinct responsibilities that work in harmony to ensure a positive, well-organized, and development-focused environment. Below, we outline the expectations and duties of our paid coaches and parent coaches to clarify how each contributes to the success of our teams.

Paid Coaches

  • We will have an experienced head coach and assistant coach for each team. 
  • We understand that the (paid) coaches are the subject experts and that is why we are paying you, to improve our program and our kids.
  • Work together to plan and organize practices.
  • Manage playing time. We expect fair and equal playing time for all offensive and defensive positions.
  • Manage substitutions in game.  
  • Work together to teach and implement offensive and defensive strategies. 
  • Communicate with players and parents any changes to the schedule. 

Parents Coach/Team Manager

  • We anticipate having one or two parent coaches for each team. 
  • We ask that the parent coach work with the paid coaches in a 50/50 matter about issues outside of the teaching aspects. 
  • Ensure all players are following FYLA’s players code of conduct.
  • Ensure all coaches are following FYLA’s coaches code of conduct.
  • Help coaches monitor playing time making sure fair and equal playing time for all offensive and defensive positions.
  • Assist paid coaches in managing players at practice and games. 
  • Assist paid coaches with drills at practice. 
  • A parent coach's role (unless otherwise stated) is to support the (paid) head coach.
